Gary Hayes
Gary Hayes passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family November 15, 2023, just 2 days after his 70th birthday, from Alzheimer’s disease.
Gary was born to Peter Roger and Ruth May Hayes, on November 13, 1953. Gary had a love for music and he loved to reminisce back on his time playing in his band, Shades of Time. He graduated from South High School, where he met his sweetheart, Marsha Embley. They were married shortly after graduating in the Salt Lake Temple on April 23, 1973.
Gary learned the value of hard work and attention to detail by working closely with his dad doing painting and wall coverings. He wanted to expand on these skills so he obtained his general contractor license which allowed him to run a successful construction business. He was a master craftsman in everything he touched, from home remodels, commercial spaces, furniture, cars and boats. The family loved spending time on the lake in the boat he built. He had many work relationships that turned into lasting friendships.
Gary and Marsha built their home in Summit Park, where they raised their three children, Chad, Melia and Sean, and added Nancy, Jeanine, Greg, April, Ian, Scott, Brian and Rochelle as well as many others that considered him a father figure. He loved taking the family to new and adventurous places. His favorite activities were 4-wheeling, caving, hiking, climbing, motorcycling, boating, camping, “fishing”, and anything outdoors.
His love of outdoors complemented his love for service. He was a dedicated Scoutmaster that was willing to go above and beyond with the activities he planned. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He held many callings, but his favorites were working with the youth. He was passionate about his service in the community including Ham Radio, Red Cross, Search and Rescue, First Responder, CERT and FEMA. He had a soft spot for anyone in need and he was always someone you could depend on. He was a kind and humble man with a wicked sense of humor. He was a quiet teacher that spoke louder through his example. With dad gone, the world feels a little emptier and a part of our hearts are now in heaven.
Gary is survived by his wife, Marsha; children Chad Hayes (Julee), Melia Tingey (Derek), Sean Hayes (Alicia); and grandchildren, CP, Mikayla, Emmi, Bugs, Leo, Callie, Ellie, Braxton, Maddie, Holly, and so many others that loved him dearly.
Funeral services will be held Monday, November 20, 2023 at 11 am at the River Ridge 4th Ward, 1244 West Chavez Drive, South Jordan, Utah. Friends may visit with family, Sunday, November 19, from 6 to 8 pm at the same location. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10 to 10:30 am. Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park
